Uses of Podcasts in Education and Libraries:

  • stay current on the profession and topics of personal or professional interests in a simple way--listen while you do other things!
  • school announcements
  • booktalks by librarian and students
  • classroom information
  • lectures and lessons available to students for review or when absent
  • "how to" information pertinent to class or library
  • library promotion
  • interviews
  • projects--particularly combining pictures or video, such as a Voice Thread
  • ESL students
  • storytelling
  • reading improvement--books online or parts (be careful of copyright)
  • Introductions/orientation for new students
  • foreign language classes
  • lessons that students and or whole classes can complete independently that teach information literacy skills (i.e., The School Librarian lessons by Terry Hime)
  • grant impaired patrons access to guest authors/speakers, though unable to attend the actual event
  •  emphasizes good speaking skills regarding enunciation, speed, tone, and volume

SAFETY ISSUES:

  • really not as much an issue with students, since the professional would monitor podcast before it is uploaded for the public
  • don't have students reveal personal information or full names
  • inform parents of projects involving podcasting
